Elko CAB approves small moose quota; NDOW outlines habitat projects and invasive-species work

NDOW reported an estimated statewide moose population of about 125 animals and summarized the inaugural moose hunt in which both successful hunters harvested mature bulls meeting minimum book size thresholds (~130 inches). "Both hunters were successful harvesting mature bulls... both bulls made book minimum a 130 inches," CJ Lingwood said.
The CAB moved to approve the moose quota as presented (two bull tags) and the motion passed by voice vote. On habitat, Area 6 staff described pilot plantings of drought-tolerant shrub seedlings and large-scale herbicide work (approximately 4,000 acres treated last year in the Sheep Creeks with plans for up to 12,000 acres of follow-up treatment using indaziflam) to reduce invasive annual grasses and jump-start succession.
The board thanked NDOW biologists for the work and closed the meeting; the next CAB meeting is scheduled for June 9 with the commission meeting that Friday and Saturday.
