Council adopts resolution opposing data-center approvals until study and policy review are complete

Councilmember Dan English read a resolution declaring the city’s opposition to approving new data-center facilities within city limits until the council has completed additional studies and policy review of infrastructure and environmental impacts. "A City Council of the City of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho expressing opposition to the construction, development, expansion, or approval of data center facilities within the city limits until the city completes further analysis studies and policy reviews," English read aloud while presenting the resolution language.
Planning staff and the city attorney explained that the city’s zoning code treats high-impact uses as subject to special-use permits and that industrial zones in the city are limited, so large data-center projects would be constrained by available acreage and zoning. Staff offered to research best practices and return with recommendations; council approved Resolution 26-065 by roll call.
