Council authorizes police to apply for COPS micro-grant to build digital-forensics capacity

Council approved a resolution allowing the police department to apply for a 2026 COPS micro-grant (~$128,290) to add in-house digital-forensics equipment, training and certifications so the department can process electronic evidence locally and reduce outside backlogs.
Lieutenant Tilson presented the police department’s request to apply for the U.S. Department of Justice COPS Community Policing Development micro-grant to establish an in-house digital-forensics capability. He told council the funding would expand the duties of an existing crime-analyst position and buy the equipment, software and training needed to process complex electronic evidence for child-exploitation, narcotics, financial and violent-crime cases.
"This grant would allow us to process evidence locally, improve investigative efficiency, reduce delays, and better support victims and prosecutions," Lieutenant Tilson said. The department emphasized the request creates no new permanent position and requires no match; council approved Resolution 26-062 by roll call to authorize application and acceptance if awarded.
