Historic Preservation Commission lays out outreach plan to raise district awareness

Chair Matt Rose presented an outreach agenda asking the commission to move beyond regulatory reviews and to proactively promote Manitou Springs' historic resources, education and incentives.
"The HPC is directed to actively promote, protect, and facilitate the care of local historical assets and structures," Rose said, citing the commission's powers and duties and urging a series of posts, articles and engagement activities aimed at homeowners and prospective buyers.
Commissioners proposed dividing the work into three task groups (posts, articles and engagement) to do strategy work between meetings while complying with open-meetings rules (no more than two commissioners working together without public notice). Commissioner Jahan Ara Khan suggested a recurring feature that "interviews a house" to surface stories about a district and feed social-media posts and longer articles. Commissioners discussed low-cost pamphlets for new homeowners, using existing city social channels, and staging demonstrations (for example, window-repair show-and-tells) at public events.
Staff and the city attorney reminded commissioners that a quorum meeting requires public notice; staff offered to coordinate with communications to host and distribute content. The commission agreed to schedule a strategy session at the next meeting to set a theme and task assignments for the fall outreach push.
