Owner says back unit at 1410 South DeSoto is unsafe for young child, cites economic hardship

Property owner Matt Fraizes told the Architectural Review Commission he and his wife bought the Hyde Park home in 2023 and that the detached accessory unit has been a safety concern for their young child since they moved in.
“My name is Matt Fraizes, I'm a property owner along with my wife, Erica,” Fraizes told the commission, and later said the “unit isn't safe for us to have in our backyard with our son and future kids.” He said the family has not made changes to the unit and described being uncomfortable using the yard. Fraizes reported he and his wife collected signatures from immediate neighbors who support demolition and that one neighbor attended the hearing to speak in favor.
Fraizes said uncertainty about future family plans has left rehabilitation and rebuilding options on hold and that the cost to bring the accessory structure to a usable, safe condition would be “exceedingly expensive,” contributing to the economic‑hardship case the commission considered.
