Stormwater staff secure MPCA grant for Lower North Drainage Study amid heavier rains

Stormwater Compliance Specialist Chelsey Baker reviewed the stormwater system asset base and program work for 2024, reporting there are 93 miles of storm sewer, 2,907 inlets and 1,191 manholes as well as multiple pump stations. She said 2024 successes included adoption of an Erosion and Sediment Control Plan, re-establishing construction-site erosion-control inspections and stepped-up outreach.
"The department received a grant from the MPCA to complete a Lower North Drainage Study," Baker told the council, noting that 2025 work will emphasize increased enforcement of state and local ESCP permits and continued education. Baker flagged a principal challenge: more frequent and intense rainfalls are inundating the drainage system and the corps pump stations will need renovation.
