Street Superintendent outlines 2024 accomplishments, plans for smoother roads

Street Superintendent Bode presented the Streets Department annual report at the North Mankato City Council work session on March 3, 2025, saying the department "maintains 75 centerline miles of streets." He reported eight full-time and one part-time employees, 51 pieces of equipment and about 14,000 labor hours recorded in 2024. Work last year included crushing concrete for use on the Page Avenue reconstruction, replacement of more than 100 street signs, 163,455 square yards of seal coating and 30,400 square yards of mill-and-overlay, and three alley projects.
Bode identified key challenges—an aging Public Works facility, older equipment and upcoming retirements—and said those factors shape operational priorities. For 2025 he said the department will increase use of mastic for small patching to create smoother driving surfaces and implement tablets to assign and track work. He also noted that mild winters reduced snow removal costs and that pretreating roads for events both speeds clearing and benefits the environment.
