Commission reviews WUI, municipal bills and local projects; commissioners report on staffing and road work

Commissioners used the July 14 meeting to review several ongoing legislative and land-management issues, including a Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) bill and a Preliminary Municipalities bill. The commission also discussed a recent presidential proclamation that reduced the size of the Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument.
Commission reports covered staffing and local infrastructure: Chair Gwen Brown said the county is hiring a full-time position for the senior center and described recent wildfire assessment and coordination with the Kanab City Fire Department. Commissioner Celeste Meyeres reported the county is starting the Skutumpah project, addressing drainage on Mountain View Road, and setting aside Tourism, Recreation and Trails (TRT) funds for road issues; she noted UDOT plans work on Coral Pink Sand Dunes Road in 2027. Commissioners also reported favorable DOJ decisions about disclaimers of interest and that the North Kaibab trailhead and Point Imperial are open.
