Forest Service says fire‑season staff are filled; Lamoille Road repairs and 1,000‑acre fuels work planned

Josh Nichols, district ranger for the U.S. Forest Service in Elko, told the advisory commission the district is fully staffed for fire season and described several near‑term projects. “I wanted to let you all know that we are fully staffed in our fire positions for fire season,” Nichols said, adding that staffing on other parts of the district remains variable.
Nichols gave a timeline for Lamoille Road repair work above the Boy Scout camp: the project is under contract and is scheduled to start around Sept. 1, with roughly a month of work and a two‑week period when the road will be completely closed to replace a culvert. He also said the Forest Service is preparing a contract for up to 1,000 acres of fuels treatment on the west side of Jarbidge, with the contract likely to go out to bid in about two weeks and work targeted to begin in the first part of August. Nichols said the fuels work will focus on pinyon‑juniper and subalpine fir stands, targeting beetle‑killed trees and establishing fuel breaks along road corridors.
