Chair King to schedule March 2028 planning meeting as committee debates continuity and schedule

Chair King said the committee would aim to give future appointees time to prepare and planned to schedule a March 2028 meeting. "I will speak with the madam clerk and director Booker, to ensure that we have a meeting scheduled sometime in March 2028," the chair said.
Members spent much of the meeting debating how to create continuity on a panel whose membership is coterminous with the appointing officials. Several members urged staggered terms so the committee would not risk losing half its membership overnight after elections; staff advised that changing appointments or term structure would require legislative action. The government affairs director noted the charter committee is addressed in Section 1.100 of the city charter and described the committee's statutory parameters.
Legal counsel clarified procedural rules members raised about quorum and appointments. "A quorum is based on the number of filled positions," the deputy city attorney said, explaining that unfilled seats do not count against reaching quorum. Chair King asked members who will remain through 2028 to study the charter text and begin collecting suggested edits so the committee arrives at the March meeting prepared to set priorities and elect leadership.
