City Manager John Mitchell asked the council whether it wanted staff to begin immediate planning for a July 4, 2026 citywide celebration centered at Brockdale Park and said staff had obtained buy-in from the Army Corps of Engineers for waterfront fireworks. "We got the army corps buy in, and 1 of the things we'd really like to look at is a, barge fireworks show where the barge is out on the lake and sits off the fireworks," Mitchell said as he described a possible barge-based fireworks display and related logistics.
Councilors discussed timing (4th vs. weekend), potential coordination or joint shows with neighboring municipalities, traffic and egress concerns for Brockdale Park, and contingency planning such as shuttle service and crowd control. Mitchell cautioned that some infrastructure items the city hoped to rely on — for example, a new traffic signal at a nearby intersection — are on state timetables and cannot be guaranteed by next summer. The council gave staff direction to proceed with planning and to convene a subcommittee to flesh out event details and responsibilities.
