WELD awarded $1.13 million HUD grant for on-demand housing pilot for King County jail releases

Jim Chambers told the council that WELD was approved for a $1,130,000 grant to operate an on-demand housing pilot for people leaving King County Jail.
"We were approved for a $1,130,000 grant to do on demand housing for people being released directly from the jail," Chambers said. He described the pilot as housing people for 30, 60 or 90 days while providing IDs, medication continuity, clinical case management and pathways to longer-term housing or treatment. Chambers said the pilot will house around 70 people during the year and serve up to 100 with services and that staff plan to begin the pilot in October.
In response to council questions, Chambers said WELD is not yet embedded inside jails for pre-release programming but will receive referrals at the time of release; most pilot participants are expected to be people sentenced under Department of Corrections community supervision or probation and will typically have stays of 30 to 60 days under the pilot design.
