Long Beach to install eight EV chargers at Kennedy Plaza using state and utility grants

The City Council voted Aug. 4 to move forward with purchase and installation of eight electric-vehicle charging stations along the southeast boundary of Kennedy Plaza. City staff said the total installation cost is $479,000 and will be fully covered by a $296,000 grant from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and a $183,000 grant from PSEG Long Island.
City staff explained the selected installer, Wood Hollow Energy Partners, will perform the work under an existing New York State contract. "We are not paying for any of it," a council member said, praising staff for securing grants and ensuring that installation and maintenance costs will be covered by charging fees. Staff also said the city will collect revenue from users to pay PSEG for electricity and to cover maintenance and ongoing costs.
Council members noted the stations would be the first publicly available chargers on the barrier island and said the deal represents a better outcome than prior proposals that required revenue-sharing or city contributions. The council introduced and approved the related resolutions via the block vote.
