Diane Cooper, founder and CEO of Caregivers Outreach Incorporated, said the group works directly with schools, counselors and doctors to identify youth caregivers and ease burdens: “If they're coming to school late, can they come in a little later? Can they get extra homework?” COO Kristen Morris added that agency staff accompany youth to medical appointments and help secure Medicaid home‑attendant services and home health aides. The program’s approach emphasizes cross‑sector coordination so schools, doctors and community services understand the demands on youth caregivers.
Youth caregiver Bridal Oni described long‑term caregiving responsibilities and the mental‑health toll: “It was overwhelming and stressful. I didn't have a lot of time to work with myself,” they said, recounting eight years of care since 2019 that included housing disruption and COVID‑era isolation.
Organizers said the free symposium is scheduled for October 14 at Lehman College and will include domestic and international speakers, practical resources and opportunities for providers to describe services.
