Board sets 2026 subcommittees and signals restorative process after December meeting

The Board unanimously approved its 2026 ad hoc subcommittee assignments and representatives, including a Superintendent’s Salary Subcommittee, Budget Subcommittee, Gateway Subcommittee and others, and directed staff to post clearer descriptions of each subcommittee’s purpose, history and staff liaisons on the website.
Board President Hugo Torres proposed the transparency measures and trustees voted to adopt the assignments after a motion by Board Member Patricia Love and a second by Board Member Susan Alvaro. Board Member Love publicly apologized for not defending Deputy Superintendent Kevin Bultema at a December 15 meeting and stressed the need for the Board to model respectful partnership with staff; Torres and Deputy Superintendent Marco Chávez said they intend to pursue restorative healing work when participants are ready.
Trustees also reported on recent subcommittee work: the Board/Superintendent Advocacy Subcommittee has drafted a letter for Senator Becker to request a Legislative Analyst’s Office review of funding disparities; the YMCA Partnership Subcommittee is preparing details on a housing project cost and expects to bring recommendations to the full Board in February.
