Public comment divided but many speakers voiced support for Oceanlight
Summary

Deputy Superintendent Marco Chávez told the Board that 33 written comments had been submitted before the meeting: 31 in opposition and 2 in favor. Dozens of live commenters then spoke on Item 3 during the public-comment period; the minutes list more than 60 individuals who addressed the board, including parents, teachers, students and representatives from the California Teachers Association.
The live commenters were split. Many parents, some teachers and several students spoke in favor of Oceanlight’s proposed TK–8 STEAM and project-based model, citing local demand and the desire for different program options. Other educators and district representatives—including a CTA speaker and district staff—spoke in opposition, emphasizing procedural lapses, programmatic concerns and potential fiscal impacts on districts.
