San Mateo County Board votes to raise trustee pay to $1,500 per month under AB 1390

On Dec. 15 the San Mateo County Board of Education approved increasing trustee compensation to $1,500 per month, effective in January, by a vote of six in favor and one opposed (Trustee Mike O’Neill).
Deputy County Attorney Lisa Cho told trustees that AB 1390 modernizes board compensation after more than 40 years without an update and that choosing a new base now matters because future increases are capped at 5% annually. Staff provided the fiscal impact: current total annual compensation was noted as $31,752 and raising the stipend to $1,500 per month would increase the total to $126,000 annually (with approximately half the increase affecting the current fiscal year because of timing).
The motion was moved by Board Member Love and seconded by Board Member Alvaro. The minutes record the final vote and staff’s budget analysis that the increase is financially manageable for inclusion in the second interim budget.
