Oceanlight founders urge countywide charter to expand access in North County

Oceanlight petitioners — who identified themselves as founding educators and parents — told the Board their proposal is intended to expand access to a TK–8 integrated STEAM and project-based model across North County communities such as Daly City, San Bruno and South San Francisco. Petitioners argued a countywide charter prevents a single district’s enrollment preferences from filling seats and denying access to families who live outside an authorizing district.
Petitioners said outreach and surveys show strong interest in their program and that starting with one cluster of campuses would allow them to place satellite sites in neighborhoods with the greatest transportation barriers. They stressed their intention to hire credentialed special education leadership and to contract pre-opening special education expertise so students with IEPs can be served from day one. Petitioners asked the Board to weigh whether denying the petition would deny a program families have requested.
