Board adopts new policy authorizing student board members

The San Mateo County Board of Education on Nov. 19 approved a new policy to allow student board members after a second reading and vote.
Deputy Superintendent Marco Chávez introduced the policy during the meeting. Board Member Beverly Gerard moved the policy’s adoption, and Board Member Patricia Love seconded the motion. The policy passed unanimously (Alvaro, Arias, Bonini, Gerard, Love, O’Neill, Torres).
Board Member Chelsea Bonini asked for clearer context and a timeline for rollout and whether a Youth Commission liaison could be included. Deputy Superintendent Chávez said Human Resources and Associate Superintendent Tami Moore will support onboarding steps and that staff will develop a communication and implementation timeline to inform Gateway students, the Youth Commission and Court and Community students.
The action establishes the policy framework; the Board requested follow-up reporting on implementation timing and communication plans at future meetings.
