Pacifica district warns Oceanlight charter could cost millions if many students transfer

Pacifica School District officials told the San Mateo County Board of Education on Oct. 22 that the Ocean Shore co-location and a new countywide charter could reduce district enrollment and revenue. The district reported an attrition study showing enrollment falling from about 2,660 to about 2,560 — a loss of roughly 100 students — and said most attrition occurred in grades four through six.
Pacifica staff told the board that roughly 40 students transferred to Good Shepherd parochial school (30 were from Ocean Shore) and that the district expected about 250 Ocean Shore students to co-locate to Sunset Ridge, with approximately 190 currently attending the co-located site. The district warned that if 50% of the co-located students chose to enroll in the new charter, the financial impact would total "millions," jeopardizing small-district programming, especially costly special-education services (Pacifica said 27% of its students are eligible for autism-related support).
