Park board approves purchase of crack-sealing machine to cut maintenance costs

The LaPorte County Parks and Recreation Board voted to buy a walk-behind crack-repair machine and initial materials to allow in-house asphalt maintenance rather than contracting out small parking-lot sealing jobs. Superintendent Jeremy proposed the purchase during new business, citing a contractor's quote of $5,967.50 to seal cracks in a single lot and a vendor price for the machine at about $4,500 including 15,000 feet of material.
"The quote for that was $5,967.50," Jeremy said, and he added he could "buy this machine ... for about $4,500" which would reduce per-foot repair costs from roughly $2.50 to about $0.30 initially. The board discussed funding the purchase from its non-reverting supplies balance and authorized the purchase by voice vote; the chair announced "Ayes have it."
