Consultant tells Sunnyvale board district 'mirror' shows performance gaps and system misalignments

Scott Maguire, a consultant from Orenda, told the Sunnyvale School District board on April 6 that the district should "hold up a mirror" to its systems and policies after a review of site visits, interviews and almost 400 surveys. The study used 2024–25 data as the most recent full year and found district enrollment around 5,764 students and persistent outcome gaps for several student groups.
Maguire said the review produced four recommendation buckets: repair symbolic data systems and align assessments to standards; strengthen program design (especially English language development and differentiated instruction); expand access and reentry into accelerated math pathways; and create clearer district–site alignment with measurable multi-year goals. "Teachers are going home every day, exhausted," Maguire said, praising staff commitment while underscoring system-level fixes needed to translate that work into consistent results. Trustees asked for a concise next-steps timeline and a narrated, translated presentation for broader community access.
