Staff explained the calendar aligns in part with Fremont Union High School District and aims to balance instructional days (the district currently provides 181 student days).
Public commenters urged caution. Leah (speaker 10), a TK teacher and parent, said shortening the transition harms early learners and called for decisions grounded in research: "The continued elimination of the 6 week transition period for TK and kindergarten is deeply concerning... The transition time is also critical for building strong partnerships with families." Courtney Jansen (speaker 14) suggested later conference times and an additional spring conference week to improve family‑teacher communication. Several trustees asked staff to return with evaluation metrics, multiple measures of teacher and parent feedback and a plan tied to the negotiated MOU to assess the pilot in its second year.
District staff reiterated the change is a two‑year pilot negotiated with the union and pointed to variable implementation factors this year (TK expansion, assessment changes). Trustees requested targeted surveys of TK/kindergarten teachers and parents and earlier collection of implementation data so the board can evaluate impacts before the pilot concludes.
