Desiree Thielen, the Fallon County DES Coordinator, presented the policy and described plans for community education, including visits to local schools and posting audio examples of siren sounds on the Fallon County web page so residents can learn what the various alerts mean. The policy clarifies that county-owned sirens will be maintained by the county but that the mayor and the local fire department will have activation authority for town-area alerts. Desiree told the council she hopes the commissioners will adopt the policy and that the education effort will reduce public confusion about siren tones.
The council listed next steps as approving the formal policy language and beginning outreach; no implementation timetable was set at the meeting. The vote was recorded as carried 3:0.
