Commissioners approve precinct combining but table final site decisions for more review

The Tarrant County Commissioners Court voted 3–2 to combine registered precincts for the purpose of calculating the statutory minimum number of election-day polling locations. County staff explained that combining eligible precincts is a lawful option under the Texas Election Code and that the exercise sets a legal floor for polling-site counts; the court may still authorize more sites than the minimum.

Commissioners debated the methodology and the timing of the recommendation amid sustained public comment that called the suggested reductions tantamount to voter suppression. After extended discussion, the court moved to table final approval of both election-day and early-voting site lists to the court’s first September meeting to allow staff to provide additional site options, documentation of methodology, and to permit commissioners extra time to review alternatives.

Court clerks recorded the vote to combine precincts as 3–2; the tabling motion for site approvals passed 5–0. Elections staff said the deadline for finalized sites to allow election programming and overseas-ballot timelines would be the first week of September.

The action does not itself change reporting by precinct; the elections office said all precinct-level reporting and counts would remain intact regardless of how the court calculates the floor for location counts.
