Jeff Osmond, who introduced the item for staff, said the state award will fund an inventory, GIS analysis and recommendations to update the city’s urban‑forestry and maintenance plan. "We were pleased to be awarded $46,000 to conduct an urban tree canopy assessment for our city," Osmond said. Councilmembers followed with technical and programmatic questions about the scope and how the work will help the city compete for future grants.
Holly Hill of Western Washington University described the partners’ work plan: interns and WWU staff will perform field vegetation inventories, GIS analyses tied to heat‑mitigation mapping, deploy temperature loggers to capture end‑of‑summer data, and assist with recommendations for species selection and maintenance priorities. Hill also said the project will include a community workforce‑development component to provide hands‑on training for students.
