Langley Main Street details volunteer programs, grants and summer events

Langley Main Street Association presented volunteer accomplishments, a $2,000 gardening grant, plans for a Community Feast (June 24 tentative), a revived Langley Street Damps (Aug. 22) and efforts to activate vacant downtown storefronts.
Allison Kubata, executive director of the Langley Main Street Association, told council the organization relies primarily on volunteers and outlined its plans for downtown placemaking and events this year.
"Hi I'm Allison Kubata, I'm the executive director for Langley Main Street Association," Kubata said at the start of the presentation. She and board member Vik Lakkarti described the volunteer gardening program (about 1,800 volunteer hours last year, roughly 900 from the garden group), a $2,000 grant used to enhance the library garden and tools, and plans for the garden season beginning Feb. 24 if weather allows.
Kubata previewed several events and programs: a tentative Community Feast on June 24, a Langley Street Damps event around Aug. 22, and renewed efforts to fill vacant storefront windows to improve downtown vibrancy. She said Main Street is pursuing additional grants, including USDA funding and state historic-preservation programs, and will host an April workshop with the Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation on grant opportunities.
Council thanked the presenters and noted the group's collaboration with businesses and the city for downtown improvements.
