County mosquito abatement urges "prevention‑first" approach, highlights drone and AI tools

Jason Burt, division director for Utah County Mosquito Abatement, told Vineyard City Council the county is shifting to a "prevention‑first" approach focused on larval treatment, surveillance and targeted adult responses. He said the program uses trap data and lab testing for West Nile and St. Louis encephalitis and adheres to thresholds before initiating sprays or aerial treatments. "We're really focusing on the public health aspect of it," Burt said, and noted that larviciding treats storm drains and breeding sites around the lake and golf course.
Burt described operational scale and tools: the county treats roughly 75,000 storm drains, maintains 36 trap locations across Utah County (three near Vineyard), and has expanded larviciding acreage from about 1,000 acres pre‑2021 to roughly 3,000 acres treated by drone. He told the council the drone program and new GIS/AI mapping let technicians locate storm drains precisely and that drone teams can execute missions faster. "The drone technology saves us about it's about 15 times faster for a drone pilot to go treat a mosquito source as opposed to somebody treating it by hand," Burt said. He invited city staff to collaborate on public outreach and service requests and offered to follow up with the council on operational details.
