Committee recommends holding lowest-mileage used bus for full-board consideration

The Transportation Committee of Beecher CUSD 200U met Sept. 22 and discussed staff proposals to buy one slightly used bus from a set of options marked A–F. Chair (speaker 2) opened the item and asked staff to present their recommendation.

Staff (speaker 4) recommended option D, saying the bus has the least mileage among the available units and is ‘‘4 years old’’ and configured as a 72-passenger bus with lap belts. Staff noted the unit ‘‘will not have a camera on it’’ and that any camera installation or purchase of an extended warranty would be extra: "It will not have a camera on it. We will have to put our cameras on it." The staff member argued replacing one bus this year was prudent because several existing buses are out of service or have mechanical problems that make repair uneconomical.

Committee members asked about lead times and vendor availability; staff said the used bus in Kankakee could be held for the district if the committee authorized staff to reserve it pending full-board review. Chair confirmed the committee would not take final action at the meeting and asked staff to refer the recommendation to the full board for its Oct. 18 agenda if it fits within the transportation budget and is still available.

Why this matters: the committee is maintaining an asset-replacement cycle to keep a consistent budget for bus purchases and avoid sudden large capital requests. The staff recommendation balances mileage, vehicle capacity, and immediate availability.

Next steps: staff will seek committee authorization to hold the unit and will present a formal recommendation and pricing to the full board on Oct. 18 for the final decision.
