District reports several weather-related facility failures; board authorizes fire-alarm bids

The district's Buildings and Grounds supervisor, Bradon Smith, told the board that winter weather revealed multiple facility issues: a frozen sprinkler line that broke and required emergency repair at the Intermediate School, problems with a 20-year-old air handler for the gym/cafeteria, a boiler repair, and a rooftop unit repair. Smith also said the Claymont High School fire alarm system is at the end of its service life, with alarms activating spontaneously and parts becoming difficult to source.
On the Superintendent’s recommendation the board authorized the district to advertise bids for replacement of the high school fire alarm system. The authorization was part of a consent package of superintendent recommendations approved by unanimous roll call; the board did not yet approve a specific vendor or contract amount and asked staff to pursue the competitive-bid process.
