Jefferson County commissioners declared an emergency and adopted Resolution 2026-39 on July 6, imposing an open-burning ban in unincorporated areas because of elevated wildland-fire risk.
Noxious-weed/fire staff recommended prohibiting yard-debris burning and other open fires on private lands; the draft resolution references county ordinance 2024-10 and carves out persistent exceptions for approved campfire pits within developed campgrounds and certain agricultural burning under permit. A drafter read the resolution’s effective date as July 6, 2026, and indicated the ban will remain in place through late September unless lifted earlier due to moisture. "The board here in law authorized the Jefferson County Sheriff and the local fire department districts to enforce and implement Jefferson County ordinance number 2024-10," the reading said.
The board approved the resolution by motion and roll call and instructed staff to publish the order and notify residents. Commissioners said the ban could be lifted earlier if precipitation improves.
