Mayor Mark Kownick read a proclamation at the Aug. 4 Village Board meeting declaring Aug. 17–21, 2026, as Schools Open Safety Week in Cary and urged drivers to take extra care as students return to classrooms.
"Do hereby proclaim August 2026 as schools open safety week in the village of Cary and encourage all drivers to remember to drive carefully especially when schools are back in session," Kownick said. The proclamation noted students will be walking, biking and using school buses and urged motorists to observe speed limits and traffic-control devices and to follow the directions of crossing guards.
The proclamation is a nonbinding advisory designed to raise public awareness ahead of the school year; the board did not take legislative action on safety measures at the meeting.
