Assistant village administrator presentation materials recommended the creation of a Cary Public Arts and Events Commission during the Aug. 4 meeting. Staff proposed seven voting members appointed by the mayor with board consent, including a village trustee as one chairperson, three at-large community members (residents or business owners) and three representatives from community organizations or taxing districts (for example the library, park district or school district). Staff also recommended a non-voting student liaison to bring youth perspective.
Staff said the commission would be advisory and volunteer-based, with staff facilitation and a guidebook to standardize reviews of murals, panels and sculptures. "These volunteers would be appointed by the mayor with the consent of the village board," the assistant village administrator said. Trustees reacted positively to the proposed structure but asked staff to clarify bylaws, meeting workload and options for a stipend or expense reimbursement if commissioners are paid for meeting participation.
