Museum asks Rangely to proclaim Sept. 9 'Dominguez–Escalante Expedition Day'

Dan Fiscus, vice president of the Rangeley Outdoor Museum, told the council the museum has a grant and plans to mark the 250th anniversary of the Dominguez–Escalante expedition in Rangeley.
"Most of you guys know me, but I'm Dan Fiscus, but I'm here on behalf of the Rangeley Outdoor Museum. I'm the vice president," he said, and later reported, "We received a grant from History Colorado for $7,500" and that the exhibit will cost "about $10,000 or more." Fiscus described an exhibit, period-cost parade participants and related outreach the museum is planning for September.
Councilmembers discussed whether the commemoration should be a town proclamation or a county declaration; members noted the physical monument is inside town limits and suggested drafting a resolution the mayor could sign. A motion to draft a resolution and declare Sept. 9, starting 09/09/2026 and recurring yearly, as Dominguez–Escalante Expedition Day in Rangeley was made, seconded and approved. The council asked staff to prepare the resolution for the next meeting and to work with the town's communications channels to publicize the event.
The request links to local tourism and education efforts: the museum said it will participate in Septemberfest and intends to showcase donated artifacts and reproductions. No budget appropriation by the town was requested at the meeting; the council's action was limited to directing staff to draft a proclamation/resolution for future formal adoption.
