Auxiliary thanks Charles Town council for Green Copeland Highway marker grant

The Green Copeland American Legion Auxiliary Unit 63 thanked the Charles Town City Council for a $2,694 grant that helped buy a Green Copeland Highway marker honoring Shields Green and John Anthony Copeland Jr.; the group will pay the remaining $500 and plans a dedication ceremony.
Linda Ballard, representing Green Copeland American Legion Auxiliary Unit 63 and Post 63, told the Charles Town City Council the group is "heartfelt" in its thanks for a city grant that covered $2,694 toward a Green Copeland Highway marker.
Ballard said the marker’s total cost was $3,194 and the auxiliary will pay the remaining $500; the group requested that the marker be paired with the nearby John Brown marker on Samuel Street and will seek state installation approvals. "The grant helped us greatly to make this come to fruition," Ballard said. She added the marker will become state property after installation and that citizens can report damage to the site.
City members asked about timing; Ballard said installation should take approximately six months, so it will not be in place before spring. The auxiliary plans a dedication ceremony timed near the Dec. 16 anniversary of the 1859 executions of Shields Green and John Anthony Copeland Jr., who were associated with the Harper’s Ferry raid.
