Council adopts consent calendar after debate over mayor’s past legal representation

The Harrison City Council approved its consent calendar on Feb. 12, 2025, including payment of bills for January 2024 and the Jan. 8, 2025 meeting minutes after an amendment was requested. Councilor Charlie Shutt asked that the January minutes note that Susan Weeks, of Vernon & Weeks, served as the mayor's personal attorney in 2017. Mayor Wanda Irish said Shutt’s information was inaccurate and suggested addressing the matter in executive session.
Councilor Joe Cornell said he had raised the issue with the mayor earlier and that the mayor "clarified that she was not her attorney," and added that had he known the facts earlier he would have voted differently in January. Councilor Josephine Prophet argued that posting a Request for Proposal for an attorney is not legally required and noted the information had already been published in the Gazette Record and the CDA Press. Josephine Prophet moved to approve the consent calendar with the changes to the minutes; the motion carried with the votes recorded in the meeting minutes.
