Policy committee recommends 31 policy revisions to full board

The Policy Committee of the Board of Education of Sesser-Valier Community Unit School District No. 196 voted by unanimous consent on Jan. 13, 2025, to recommend revised board policies to the full board for approval at the regular February 2025 meeting. The committee met in the Sesser-Valier High School library; Board President Shane Garner called the meeting to order at 7:01 PM and the meeting adjourned at 7:13 PM.

District Superintendent Jason Henry summarized recommended modifications to the district policy manual, describing the changes as falling into three categories: legal-compliance updates, substantive modifications, and non‑substantive rewrites. The packet reviewed by the committee included proposed revisions to thirty-one (31) board policies. Committee members present were Garner, Kirk and Sample; member Lance was absent. Staff present included Jason Henry (also listed as J. Henry), K. Jones and N. Page.

The committee reviewed two PRESS policy updates (Issue #116, dated August 2024, and Issue #117, dated October 2024) as part of the packet and examined which policies required substantive changes versus only revised legal references or stylistic edits. Committee discussion also noted a recent federal court decision related to Title IX; Superintendent Henry said he would monitor that ruling’s implications and bring any recommended policy changes forward after guidance from the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB).

By unanimous consent the Policy Committee agreed to forward the revised policies to the full board for consideration at its next regular meeting in February 2025. No public comment or correspondence was recorded during the meeting.
