OSWP staff complete Part 107 training; department to use drone photos for septic permits

OSWP Director Randy Swicegood told the Board that all staff on the onsite water protection team have completed the FAA portion of Part 107 training and that the department plans to incorporate drone photos with septic applications and permits.
"We are excited that soon all the staff members will be able to use drones and will be able to include the drone photos with septic applications and permits," Koontz reported, and Swicegood clarified that drones under 55 pounds can be operated without a waiver while larger drones require additional approvals. The department also reported purchasing two replacement Colorado trucks for the OSWP team to replace older vehicles.
The board asked about difficulty of obtaining the Part 107 certificate; Swicegood said the current requirement is a test and that the department supplemented staff training with emergency-management-style instruction at no extra cost beyond travel.
