Resident warns council city tabulators 'are not certified' and urges county inquiry

A Saint Francis resident told the City Council that the machine tabulators used to count votes include modems and therefore lack federal Election Assistance Commission certification, and urged the council to press the county for answers.
"Those machine tabulators are not certified," Derek Lind said after handing the council a packet that he said included an April 3, 2020 letter from ES&S and an EAC notice. He told the council the presence of modems in the machines prevented EAC certification and that the packets should prompt local follow-up with Anoka County.
City officials thanked Lind for providing the materials and said the council would digest the packet. The chair told Lind the council would take the information under advisement; staff recommended routing specific follow-up questions through the city's post-election review process so staff could research and respond.
Lind said the city council had previously passed a post-election review resolution and urged officials to contact the county to determine whether the machines in Saint Francis were affected. Councilors did not take formal action at the meeting but indicated they would review the materials and suggested the resident and council communicate further through staff to ensure a documented record of inquiries and responses.
