HERO board highlights teen center’s 14 years serving Hartland youth

Kay Fountain, speaking for the Heartland Enrichment and Recreation Organization, told the Hartland Township Board the teen center opened in 2012 and “we usually serve well over 30 kids a day,” running some days with 40 or more young people in supervised after‑school programming. Fountain said the group operates out of the former township hall and thanked the board for allowing HERO to use the building.
Fountain described daily programming that includes snacks, adult supervision, and activities such as art and gardening. She also cited community donations — including two carloads of cereal from Saint John Catholic Church and other supplies such as canvases and musical equipment — as essential to the center’s operations. Fountain said HERO is working with Howell Parks and Rec on plans for a limited, organized summer program “in 2027,” rather than the center’s current drop‑in model.
