Library warns of potential 50% cut to CLSA funding; staff applying for state grants

At the May 13 meeting, the board discussed an uncertain funding outlook for library programs. The director said federal funding likely will not be available next year and the board should plan for a possible 50% reduction in CLSA funding.
"State funding, we are still looking at, a 50% reduction in CLSA, the California, Library Services Act funds, which pays primarily for our library," the director said, noting CLSA supports services such as Link+ delivery and the Libby/Overdrive collection.
Staff said state grants that fund literacy, ESL and ZipBooks remain expected for next year. The director reported the library already received the ESL grant and is applying for adult literacy and ZipBooks funding; she cautioned some program platforms changed after the end of federal pass-through funding, which has complicated applications.
Board members discussed advocacy and training to support outreach to state decision makers and asked staff to explore possible advocacy training sessions.
