Architects say basement estimates came in higher than expected; AC question could change scope

Trustees heard that the initial architectural cost estimate for a library basement renovation came back higher than anticipated and that the architect requested an additional week to refine the scope.
"When they got the estimate back from those subcontractors, it came in much higher than anticipated," the library director said, adding that architects asked whether the space would require air conditioning because OSHA sets an 87'F limit for areas where staff are present.
The director said architects want to identify the bare minimum work needed for the space; once revised, the report will be reviewed with Anne Dunleavy and the city manager before being taken to the city council. The director also said the library foundation is eager to use the estimate for capital fundraising but staff must follow the city's process for review and approvals.
No final decisions were made at the May 13 meeting; trustees were told staff expects to have a revised estimate available within a week for internal review and potential council consideration.
