Library highlights volunteer program, names Marj Hulan volunteer of the year

The Benicia City Board of Library Trustees heard a presentation on volunteer outreach and recognition at its May 13 meeting. The board was told that Marj Hulan was named one of two volunteers of the year and that volunteers are onboarded through an interest form followed by a full application and background checks.
"Marj Hulan was, named 1 of 1 of 2 volunteers of the year," the library director said during the presentation. The director described low-cost recognition practices, including placing book plates in library copies of volunteers'favorite books so their contributions are visible to patrons.
The presenter also outlined the volunteer screening process: an initial interest form vetted by the volunteer coordinator, a full application, fingerprinting and, in some cases, additional background checks depending on the volunteer's duties. The board noted volunteers contributed a sizable amount of service: the director estimated volunteer hours equate to about $248,000 in time.
Board members praised the recent Volunteer Recognition Event and the citywide reception that included a formal presentation. The trustees discussed where volunteers can assist while avoiding using volunteers to replace paid positions.
