Raleigh Egypt principal urges county help on gates, alarms, roofs and metal detection

Kirkland Hamilton, assistant principal at Raleigh Egypt High School, told commissioners the Raleigh community's schools face multiple safety deficits: faded or missing crossing signs, nonfunctional flashing lights, gates and fences that can be bypassed, flooding in basements, failing roofs and no sprinkler system in portions of the campus. He said staff recently found multiple loaded weapons on campus and asked the commission to prioritize a wall between an annex and the gym and improved metal-detection and alarms.
Hamilton asked county commissioners to coordinate capital improvement funding because neighborhood school improvements, he said, would reduce downstream spending on corrections. The chair asked Hamilton to submit written requests and said staff would follow up with district contacts and the commissioner's office.
