Council moves to remove Jordan River Trail lighting after repeated vandalism

Deputy Public Works Director Jerimie Thorne told the council an inspection of Jordan River Trail lighting found extensive vandalism: "Feeder and secondary pole wires have been cut and stolen, junction boxes are filled with dirt, and lids are broken," and six light fixtures had been stolen between FL Smidth and the TRAX crossing. Staff presented a bid to repair the damages for $72,853 and estimated annual repair/maintenance costs between $3,000 and $15,000.
Council members discussed options: funding ongoing repairs, removing lights, or transferring maintenance responsibility to adjacent HOAs. Members expressed concern about the economic feasibility of repeated replacement. The council decided to remove the lighting infrastructure and directed staff to notify affected HOA(s) that the city will discuss alternative approaches with them.
