Saint Mary's Star of the Sea to mark 100 years; priest invites council and public

Mayor Jerry Cain read a proclamation recognizing Saint Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church's centennial and described the parish's history, regional role and service to diverse congregations. The proclamation notes the parish began as a mission church in 1892 and was formally established in Freeport in 1926.
Father Steven Tran introduced himself as a new member of the clergy who arrived July 1 and said he has been warmly welcomed. He invited the mayor, council and residents to the parish's centennial mass on Aug. 15, to be celebrated by Archbishop Joseph Vasquez of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, followed by a centennial celebration and dinner.
The council took a group photo with Father Tran and extended congratulations to parishioners on the centennial.
