Hampton Roads Partnership tells council it cut request as region tightens budgets; highlights transportation and port work

Dana Dickens, representing the Hampton Roads Partnership, presented the organization's annual report to the council and said the Partnership reduced its funding request to the City of Hampton by about 5% as jurisdictions tighten their budgets.
"We are tightening our budget, as as you will have to do," Dickens said, thanking the city for past support and urging continued regional cooperation. He framed the Partnership's work as focused on transportation, early childhood education and regional economic development.
Dickens stressed the region's interdependence, noting that the loss of a single large employer affects multiple jurisdictions. "You would think that in Gateway's situation, only Hampton was hurt. Hampton was hurt. But so were many, many other jurisdictions," he said.
He highlighted recent Partnership efforts on transportation modeling and coordination with state elected officials and the MPO, and directed councilmembers to a fuller written report in the meeting packet. Dickens said the Partnership expects to make recommendations to the Commonwealth Transportation Board on work related to the Hampton Ridge (Bridal) Tunnel following recent studies.
The presentation concluded with an offer to answer questions and a request that the city continue to support regional collaboration even as budgets tighten.
