Commission honors Congressional Award recipient and Little League All‑Stars

At the start of the Aug. 19 meeting, commissioners presented a certificate of special recognition to Sawyer Ashland for earning the Congressional Award gold medal. Staff read Ashland’s accomplishments on the certificate, noting more than 1,000 service hours, leadership in rocketry and founding a robotics club. Sawyer told the commission he focused on STEM outreach and mentoring younger students through a VEX robotics team and summer rocketry projects.
Commissioners also presented certificates to the Viejo Little League 2025 Juniors Select All‑Stars, who placed third in California. Coaches and team managers described a season of district wins and a Southern California Tournament of Champions victory that led to a state-level third-place finish. The city thanked District 68 representatives and parents for travel and logistical support. "Bringing engineering and STEM to the community was really important for me," Sawyer said during his remarks.
