Staff summarized four options: expand the existing Veterans Memorial at Lakeside Park (small, limited expansion room); add plaques/nameplates to the Murray Center Veterans Plaza; establish a banner program along Veterans Way allowing resident-paid banners; or build a prominent, photo-op 'wow-factor' memorial (a large flagpole or dedicated memorial near the La Paz/Olympiad view corridor).
Commissioners asked practical questions about maintenance, eligibility criteria (who qualifies, residency requirements, rotation/timing for banners), parking/access for a large flagpole site, and long-term staff workload to administer a banner program. Several commissioners favored starting with improvements to the existing Veterans Plaza (nameplates and seating) and holding the banner idea for later; others supported pursuing a single prominent flagpole location if funding allowed. The commission agreed to table the item and asked the ad hoc committee to compile examples, cost estimates and proposed criteria and return with a revised recommendation.
