Committee advances 2026–27 budget packet, sets Sept. 8 hearing

The Finance & Facilities Committee of the Manitowoc School District reviewed key assumptions in the preliminary 2026–27 ("2627") budget and voted to move multiple items to the full Board for consideration.
Committee Chair opened the meeting and turned the floor over to Nathan, who led the budget review. Nathan said the district’s preliminary plan reduces an earlier capital assumption—CG Schmidt work—from about $6.8 million to roughly $3.4 million and trims an initial preliminary allocation of more than $10 million down to about $7 million to preserve contingency in fund 49. "My initial proposed budget had over $10,000,000 allocated this year… the prelim this budget that I'm gonna take to the full board takes that down, brings it to about 7," Nathan said.
The committee approved three procedural recommendations by voice vote: to publish the 2627 budget in the newspaper per state statute section 65.9, to schedule the budget hearing for 05:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2026, and to forward the 2627 budget to the Board for consideration on Sept. 8, 2026. Chair moved each motion; each received a voice second and were approved.
The committee discussed next steps for finalizing numbers (October 15 estimates and the first state payment in November are key dates) and directed staff to return with refined projections and any recommended revisions at future meetings.
